An Introduction to Kinesiology

Kinesiology is a therapy focusing on muscle testing techniques. The belief is our muscles are linked to particular organs, glands and energy lines. When a muscle shows weakness, it can signal a distant internal problem such as nerve damage, internal pain, a chemical imbalance or an emotional blockage.

How did Kinesiology originate?

The discipline was developed by the chiropractor George Goodheart in 1964. He discovered that when a particular muscle is isolated and gently tested, it can reveal information about your overall health and wellbeing.

Kinesiology is a relatively new and evolving practice, and its uses are wide-ranging. Practitioners may choose to specialise in a particular branch of kinesiology which includes creative, educational, health and progressive kinesiology. This means each branch will have its own health benefits depending on your desired outcome and the practitioners speciality.

Kinesiology practitioners are often chiropractors, but may also be osteopaths, dentists, nutritionists or general physicians. Depending on the speciality of your practitioner, you may receive other treatments in combination with your kinesiology session.

Neck and Shoulder pain

According to the Kinesiology Federation UK, a case study was undertaken on a patient with a painful neck and shoulders. The patient said she had felt fuzzy and was unable to concentrate for longer periods of time. She could not relate the problem to any past injury or particular emotional trauma it had developed over time as though out of the blue. After a few treatments, she reported back that all her neck and shoulder pain had disappeared completely and her head felt clear for the first time in months.

Headaches

According to the Kinesiology Federation UK, a case study was undertaken on a patient with headaches and IBS symptoms over a period of 6 months using Kinesiology treatment. Practitioners may also observe your blood pressure and ask you to do a series of sitting and standing exercises to check your posture, gait and range of motion.

Once these are complete, muscle monitoring and testing can begin. Typically, your practitioner will apply light pressure and ask you to match that pressure. Depending on the test and isolated muscle, you will either match the pressure implying a strong or locked muscle or will not match the pressure implying a weak or unlocked muscle. These tests will ascertain any imbalances for the practitioner.

The remainder of the session will focus on treatments and on the body toàn thân holistically. This may include structural treatments (massage, acupressure, structural realignment or meridian balancing), chemical treatments (nutritional, herbal, homoeopathic or flower remedies) or emotional treatments (stress release, relationship or lifestyle suggestions).

How do I find a Kinesiology practitioner?

The tools that a Kinesiologist uses to make the corrections can vary greatly depending on their therapeutic and clinical skills. Kinesiologists with a background in Osteopathy, Chiropractic or sports massage may favour more structural corrections.
